What are the causes for left atrial dilation?

Dilation of the left atrium occurs in patients with any type of left heart failure, atrial fibrillation, or restrictive cardiomyopathy. A classic finding is Mitral stenosis caused by rheumatic fever in areas with inadequate antibiotic therapy for streptococcal throat infection.
